The Late Summer To Do List

When the summer season comes to an end, we all feel a little tinge of going back to 5th grade.  Kind of sad (or really sad), the summer is over but feeling the need to shift priorities for what’s next.  Back to school shopping, get the kids haircuts, prepare for fall sports, close the pool…OMG everything is so overgrown.  Not usually the highest priority but with all the rain there has been a lot of summer growth.

MAYER TREE SERVICE LATE SUMMER TO DO LIST

TIME TO PRUNE

With all the rain your trees and shrubs have grown significantly.  More than an average year.  With so much growth and fruit production the likelihood of trees breaking is greatly increased.  Have your plants pruned to put them back into proportion and reduce the risk of damage.

Remove trees before they fail

Do you have over grown or leaning trees? Are there trees compromised with decay fungi?  With all the growth due to the rain all trees are more vulnerable.  However trees with structural defects are more a risk.  This is why we see more damage in late summer when the trees are full of lush healthy leaves and fruit.

Do you have trees or vines on your house wires?  This heavy growth can cause power outage or intermittent service.

Are there dead trees in your yard, a neighbor’s property or on town land close enough to cause damage to your property. Don’t find out the hard way.  We continue to be stunned by how many obvious dead trees we see.

InsectS and Disease

All the heavy growth and wet conditions are a great breeding ground for insects and disease.  We can still treat insects now either with spray or systemic treatments that will reduce the damage now and better prepare your plants for next spring.

It is too late to treat for most leaf diseases and some maybe just this season due to the wet conditions. However, if you notice early leaf drop, discolored leaves or spotted leaves this can indicate a health issue.  If it is a long-term perennial disease you may want to consider getting on our schedule for next spring.

Our certified arborists can help create a plan best suited for you and your plants
