Tree Removal Cost: The Top 5 Factors

While trees add beauty and majesty to your yard, there are some times when you need to cut them down, either for aesthetic or practical purposes. Dead trees or those that are diseased, decaying, or otherwise damaging to the surrounding environment can pose a risk to your home and garden. Or maybe you’re embarking on new construction or are looking to increase the sunlight on your property and tree removal is necessary to your landscaping.

Whatever the reason, it’s important to find a trusted professional with experience in evaluating and removing trees. When homeowners take it upon themselves to remove unwanted trees, unforeseen problems can occur and even lead to accidents or injuries. Working with a licensed, insured professional gives you the added protection should anything go wrong. Some people find tree removal to be too expensive, but when you consider your safety and the value of your property, the price tag is well worth it. Here are some of the most important factors in tree removal cost.

Tree removal cost factor 1 - Tree size

The size of the tree includes the height and the diameter. These will be the biggest determinants in deciding the majority of the removal cost. Typically, the larger and taller the tree, the more expensive the removal. While there are hundreds of different species of tree, size is usually better indicator of removal cost than species. Some companies may calculate the cost per inch of diameter of the trunk. In addition, many areas require you to purchase a permit to remove a tree or a hire a police detail if they need to put their equipment on the street

TREE REMOVAL COST FACTOR 2 - Tree Condition

The size of the tree includes the height and the diameter. These will be the biggest determinants in deciding the majority of the removal cost. Typically, the larger and taller the tree, the more expensive the removal. While there are hundreds of different species of tree, size is usually a better indicator of removal cost than species. Some companies may calculate the cost per inch of diameter of the trunk. In addition, many areas require you to purchase a permit to remove a tree or hire a police detail if they need to put their equipment on the street.

TREE REMOVAL COST FACTOR 3 - Circumstances of Removal

In some cases, tree removal can become an urgent matter. If a tree near your property or car is leaning over or falls, it needs to be removed before causing even further damage. The need for emergency removal can be more expensive than one that can be scheduled ahead of time. This is both because of the time sensitivity as well as the added risk when a tree is in a precarious position. For this reason, prices typically go up after a natural disaster, due to the high volume of removal requests and added risk of removal. If your tree removal is an emergency, reach out to your insurance company before paying out of pocket to see if it may be partially covered. Most tree companies will insist you pay them and your insurance company reimburses you.  Insurance policies vary dramatically.

TREE REMOVAL COST FACTOR 4 - Access to Tree

In less straightforward situations, the company may send someone to assess how easy it is to access the tree for removal. This depends on location and geography. Wide open areas with good access are ideal but in many cases the tree needs to be dismantled by hand.  This makes it much more labor intensive which means a more expensive job.   Extra care must be taken to remove or trim trees located close to powerlines, roads, and buildings. It’s increasingly important to have an experienced arborist cutting down a tree in these circumstances because they will employ the correct method to ensure that the tree does not fall on or damage any nearby structures. In certain cases, special machinery like cranes will be used. All of these additional precautions will also impact the final cost of removal.

TREE REMOVAL COST FACTOR 5 - Additional Services to Removal

While the price associated with removal is one thing, there are additional costs for services provided before and after the actual removal. For instance, if you’re looking to utilize the wood from the felled tree, a company will charge extra to cut the wood into firewood lengths. The cost of tree removal doesn’t always include the stump. Depending on your preference, you can choose to leave the tree stump or pay an additional price to have it removed, which can be done by grinding it into mulch.

  1. To whom it may concern:
We just wanted to write to comment on the skill, professional manner, and courtesy of your entire crew when a mammoth tree on the corner of our property and town property was deemed at risk by Reading Electric and was taken down on Tuesday, April 26, 2022. The carefully planned step-by-step process certainly brought a day of entertainment for our entire neighborhood. When the crew was finished at 6:00 pm the only sign of the day long activity was was the very short stump left at the corner of our property. All the remnants of the tree — limbs, branches, trunk sections, sawdust,…….had been carried away. We were certainly saddened to loose such an old. beautiful shade tree, but thankful for the safe manner by which it was removed.
