Ten Pound Island Lighthouse

The Ten Pound Island Lighthouse is a beautiful and historic sight in the harbor in Gloucester, Massachusetts. Located at Gloucester, MA 01930, the lighthouse is 30 feet tall and has a conical cast iron structure. It was built in 1881 to replace an old stone tower. Today, you can take a boat tour of the island to see the historical lighthouse and other landmarks of the area.

The lighthouse was built in 1821 to guide mariners to the harbor. Its 30-foot tower features a fifth-order lantern and can be seen from many points along the waterfront of Gloucester. The lighthouse is 30 feet tall, 57 feet above sea level. In 1833, Amos Story, the man who had discovered the sea serpent, was hired as the lighthouse keeper. In 1833, he was paid $350 per year. The origin of the name Ten Pound Island has been explained in at least four different ways. Some people attribute it to the amount Story paid Indians. In another theory, the ten pound cannonball was a symbol of the peace and prosperity that came to the land.

The lighthouse on Ten Pound Island is situated on Route 127 at Fort Square. It was constructed in 1821 and was 39 feet above mean high water. The keeper of the lighthouse, Amos Story, was the son of a fisherman. In 1842, he complained about the conditions of the station and the keeper’s dwelling. In 1883, Homer boarded with the keeper. The lighthouse is home to a museum that displays the history of the island. In 1852, a new Fresnel lens replaced the old reflectors and lamps.
