The Town of Essex is located in Essex County and is approximately 33 miles northeast of Boston. It is bisected by Routes 128 and 133. The easternmost end of Route 22 is located in the town center. The town was incorporated as a town in 1819. Before then, it was part of Chebacco Parish. The first European settlers came to the area in 1634. The land had been inhabited by the Agawam tribe. The name “Chebacco” originates from the Agawam language and refers to a large lake. Later, the town had a meeting house, which was lobbied for by the community.
