The first town meeting in Essex, MA was held in 1820. William Cogswell, a native of Ipswich, was appointed selectman of the town. His house was built after the style of the town houses of Salem. It had seven fireplaces and a large hearth. Its owner, Charles Boyd, made it comfortable for residents to live in.
The Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court was established in 1780, and it is the highest court in the state. The Court hears appeals, writs of error, capital crimes, and crimes against the public good. In addition, divorces were handled by this court until 1887.
