Essex MA is a coastal town in Essex County, Massachusetts, about 26 miles north of Boston and 13 miles south of Newburyport. The town was once an important shipbuilding center and its population was 3,675 as of the 2020 census. Today, the town is a thriving residential community with a wide variety of activities and events.
The house was originally built as a two-family dwelling in the 1790s. It is notable for having two large chimneys, a center entrance, and a large hearth. While Essex is now part of Ipswich, it was originally part of a parish. The town was incorporated as a town on Feb. 5, 1819, but many early residents were still part of Ipswich. The name Essex came from a group of two hundred and six men who petitioned the Massachusetts legislature for incorporation.

While Essex, MA is a small community, there is a large foreign-born population. The largest percentage of foreign-born residents comes from China, followed by the Dominican Republic and Brazil. The only historic brick house in Essex was built by Proctor before the Revolutionary War. He also built many vessels with Courtney. The house was purchased by Moses Knowlton, whose heirs sold it back to Parkhurst. Parkhurst said he purchased it for sentimental reasons. Knowlton was a personal financer, promoter, and underwriter. The Essex County Council has its main offices in Chelmsford. Prior to 1938, the county council met in London near Moorgate. In 2007, Essex County Hall was designated as a historic building. Its interior is decorated with fine artworks from the period.
